Tom and Carol Sykes
Tom’s philosophy includes learning to do three things:
“First, learn how to use a camera in order to see the world around you in a different perspective. Two, learn a second language to better understand and appreciate other cultures. And three, learn to drive using a standard transmission because you never know when it will come in handy.”
A self-taught artist and photographer, Tom is a long time resident of Wisconsin. His interests include travel with a strong emphasis on birding. He and his wife Carol have traveled extensively as tour leaders on custom international bird tours.
He retired from Lawrence University, Appleton, WI in 2009 where he was the Director of Media Services. He and his wife Carol quickly sold their Appleton home along with most of their belongings and hit the road as full-time RVers for 9 years before settling in Sierra Vista, AZ. They recently returned to Appleton in 2024 to be closer to family, friends, and former colleagues.
Tom was the original list owner/administrator of the Wisconsin Birding Network (WISBIRDN) before turning the list over to the Wisconsin Society of Ornithology. He is a founding member of the Vietnam Dog Handler Association having served as a Scout Dog handler in Vietnam in 1968.
