On 12 April 1967, the 48th moved with the 196th LIB to Chu Lai to become part of Task Force Oregon, which later became the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal). In December of 1967, Lt. Gerald W. Vosbury assumed command. While the majority of handlers and all the dogs were located at forward area (LZ Baldy), a small footprint (the “rear area”) consisting of a raised tent located next to the 196th Brigade APO in Chu Lai. It was staffed and used to coordinate supplies for the forward area on LZ Baldy and for temporary overnight housing when supply runs from Baldy to Chu Lai were made on Highway 1.
