Wormood held in Dubuque Wednesday Morning BURIAL IN LINWOOD CEMETERY In business in Dubuque More than Half Century-Died at Springfield, Ill Sunday. The funeral of the late William W. Wormood, a pioneer Dubuque jewler who passed away Sunday night at the home of his son, A.S. Wormood, Springfield, Ill., was held Wednesday morning at 11:00 o'clock from Walton's Chapel. Rev. B.B. Braden of the Baptist Church officiated at the services. Burial was in Linwood Cemetery. On August 26, 1831, W.W. Wormood was born at Manilus, Onondaga county, New York where his father was a blacksmith. Mr. Wormood worked at this trade for a while but found it too strenuous and turned to engraving, learning the trade in a Rochester NY jewelry store. Later he worked at it in several eastern cities and in 1857 came to Dubuque where he opened a shop on Main Street which he conducted for a quarter of a century. He then removed his establishment to a location on Eighth Street but returned later to 551 Main Street where he was in business until several years ago when he disposed of his interests to A.R. Staufenbeil. Mr. Wormood was a master engraver and one of his prized possessions was a gold dollar of 1852 on which he had engraved the Lord's Prayer. The dollar is smaller than a silver dime but the prayer can be easily read with the naked eye. He was also a crack rifle shot in his day and in a match at Ft Dodge, IA, a quarter a century ago he killed 73 out of 75 live pigeons on the wing. Besides his son, A.S., Mr. Wormood leaves a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Dumble of Buffalo, NY. He also leaves a sister residing at Syracuse, NY. Mrs. Wormood's death occurred in 1868. [Dubuque Daily News]
