Iona Maxine Whaley Stone, age 88, passed away Thursday morning, December 13, 2012 after a five year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Private family graveside services were conducted Monday, December 17, 2012 at 1 pm by Chaplin Allen Withers of Alive Hospice.
Iona Whaley Stone was born March 12, 1924 in Dover, TN. She graduated from Austin Peay State University in 1945 where she received her Bachelor of Science in Education degree. While in college, she worked at night at the B.F. Goodrich plant in Clarksville, Tennessee making gas masks to support the war effort for the soldiers fighting in WWII. She began teaching elementary school in the fall of 1945 but continued her educational studies and received her Masters of Arts in Education degree as well as obtaining her Professional Supervisor's Certification from Murray State University in May 1951. She taught 1st through 5th grades during her teaching tenure in Metro Nashville Schools before she retired in June 1986.
Iona married her elementary school sweetheart Hugh Frank Stone on December 25, 1950. She attended First Christian Church on Franklin Road and loved the Lord and Jesus Christ. Iona was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, collecting angels, and appreciated red birds and roosters.
Iona was most proud of her daughter Pam and granddaughter Ashley.
The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the nurses and caretakers at Brighton Gardens of Brentwood, her physician Dr. David Lineood Edwards of Sterling Primary Care and Alive Hospice for their love and medical care.
