Art and Artifacts
Oaxaca is the most diverse state in Mexico, with some of the most intriguing and vibrant folk art in the country. There are sixteen separate indigenous groups spread across numerous villages, each of which known for their own unique artworks, from hand woven rugs, black clay pottery (barro negro), vibrantly colorful wood carvings (alebrijes) representing spirits known to the Zapotec culture, and beautifully embroidered pieces of clothing.
Oaxaca de Juarez is also home to multiple museums and art galleries displaying collections by renowned Mexican artists. Graphic arts, photography, contemporary paintings ands sculptures, religious icons, collections of pre-Hispanic Mexican art, handcrafted jewelry, and textiles. Many of these museums and art galleries are free or with a modest entry fee.
Many upscale shops along the Alcalá (pedestrian walkway) sell a wide variety of local indigenous arts. Multiple street booths located in several parks including the huge central plaza (Zocalo) offer handcrafted art, often by the artists themselves.
